GD Youth Football and Cheerleading closes out a successful 2007 season
"I'm certainly not surprised by this success," said GDYFC President David Howes. "It's a result of the kids' commitment. They truly give it 110% all the time and have a passion for football and cheerleading."
Jr. Pee Wee 1 teamTwo GDYFC football teams advanced to the playoffs this year. The Pee Wee team beat the Leicester/Spencer team with a score of 21 to 6, advancing to the next round where they suffered a rather devastating loss to the undefeated Charlton team. However, they were proud to have been the only team to score against Charlton all season. The Junior Pee Wee 1 team hosted their playoff game against Westford/Littleton "under the lights" at the GDRHS. Although they lost that game (21-0), they finished their season with an impressive record of 6 and 3.
Jr. Pee Wee CheerleadersAlso this year, two GD Cheerleading teams went to the Central Mass Cheer Competition at the Lowell Auditorium! The Junior Pee Wee cheer team brought home the league's first trophy by taking 3rd place in the competition. They will be moving on to the Regional Cheer Competition at the DCU Center on November 24th.
The level of support from parents and the community was high throughout the season. But it was particularly evident during the playoffs. Parents decorated their cars. Siblings, grandparents, & friends joined the parents in cheering their teams on, cheering so loudly they could have been heard in the next town.
Parents and coaches were all very proud to have the GDYFC program send two teams to the playoffs and one of its cheerleading teams on to the regional competition. It usually takes several years for any new program to reach a competitive level within the league. This was only the second year for the GDYFC program. In addition to crediting the kids and parents for their commitment, GDYFC organizers attribute much of the program's success to the level of interest and support they get from the community.
After some controversy over lighting of the practice fields at the Middle School last year, GDYFC chose to hold practices at Cow Pond this year, which presented some challenge for parents negotiating parking space with the soccer teams that also practice on those fields at the same time. The league expressed their appreciation to The Groton School for allowing them to use their game field for home games during the regular season and to GDRSD for allowing them to host the Pee Wee Junior 1 playoff game on the high school field "under the lights" on October 24th.
