According to GDRSD Athletic Director Dan Twomey, the district had to cut the funding out of the district budget for all freshman soccer and basketball teams at the high school and for the lacrosse teams at the middle school. Funding for sports was just one of the expenses that had to be cut back after the town s of Dunstable and Groton both failed to pass the override to support the school district.

However, the opportunity to play on a freshman soccer team will still be open to students, since the Groton Dunstable Youth Soccer Club has made a donation to the district to supplement user fees to fund a freshman soccer team. When the School Committee voted to accept the donation from the soccer club, members of the School Committee expressed concern about the trend towards depending on contributions from private organizations to fund the operation of our public school system.

The JV football and indoor track programs that the district had hoped to introduce next year will not be offered. High school boys will still have the option to play football for the Ayer Panthers under the co-op agreement that GDRSD has with the Ayer school district.

User fees for sports at both the middle school and high school have been increased to $250 per sport per season.
