Tennis Tips: Buying a Racket
By Greg Reardon
There are countless rackets available, and so many options and a wide price range, so buying a tennis racket might seem like buying a car, in a sense. But I'll keep it simple for you.
First, it's best to start with inexpensive racket, to see if you like tennis before making a significant investment.
Second, making sure the racket is comfortable is important. Grip size is a key factor in comfort. There are several grip sizes. How do you know which one is correct? The most popular grip is a 4-1/2, which is designed for the average sized hand, with 4-5/8 available for larger hands, and a 4-3/8 or 4-1/4 available for smaller hands, usually women and children. Small children typically use a size 4.
Lengths come from 19" to 27", with a long body also available! 27 inches is the standard racket length for most adults.
You will find that almost all rackets today have large heads and come in two sizes: mid plus or oversize. Even junior rackets usually come with an oversize head, which helps on off center hits and makes getting to the ball easier!
Once you decide you are in love with tennis, you can go out and get a better quality racket, made out of graphite or titanium. Higher end rackets are designed for optimum lightness and power, unlike aluminum rackets, which are less expensive, but heavier.
Some of the larger brand names are Wilson (my preference), Head, or Prince, with several other choices available.
Most all tennis shops do train their staff to help you in your selection, but you can also call me toll free with your questions: 1-888-usa-greg.
Good luck with your purchase!
